Zadar

Zadar, a town situated in the very heart of the Adriatic, the town full of rich 3000-year-old history and of extremely valuable cultural heritage.

The town has developed on the favorable position, in the centre of the east coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is protected from the influence of the open sea by the highly developed coastline and by the archipelago of Zadar islands, in number 24 bigger islands and even about 300 smaller islets and rocks that attract numerous boaters who can find a safe haven in a number of modern marines.

Nearby Zadar 5 national parks are situated – Paklenica, Plitvice, Kornati, Krka and Velebit, and 3 nature parks – Telašćica, Sjeverni Velebit and Vransko jezero.

Traffic is very well connected to Zadar, either by land, by sea or by air. It is directly connected by land with other bigger towns in the Republic of Croatia: Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik, and that only a couple of hours drive to four-lane highway. You can enter Zadar passenger port and a new tourist cruising port by sea, which are located on the Peninsula, what makes really unique experience when entering Zadar by ferry or by ship having a unique view of the whole town. By air Zadar is connected with bigger Croatian towns as well as with some European capitals (London, Dublin, Berlin, Stockholm, Bruxelles, Wien, Műnchen, Oslo, Zűrich, Stuttgart, Kὂln, Dűsseldorf) having a small but modern international airport (9 km far from its center).

Whatever way you decide to come to Zadar, natural beauties of its landscape will not leave you indifferent.

Sights

The Sea Organs were created by the help of a number of experts following the project of the Zadar architect Nikola Bašić. They are located on the very top of the Zadar waterfront , near the port for cruisers, and are recognizable for its irresistible sound and the cascade stone shape. There are stone steps about seventy meters along the coast, and down below them 35 polyethylene pipes of different size, diameter and slope were built in vertically on the coast, and they rise up diagonally to the coastal pavement. The air in the pipes suppressed by a wave is led from the wider to the narrower profile to obtain acceleration and to perform the sound in the pipes located in the passage under the coastal promenade. Through the openings in the stone the sound goes out in the promenade area. The concert of the Zadar Sea Organs is unpredictable and unrepeatable as the sea energy is unpredictable , and by the help of the waves and tides this energy plays the organ. The Sea Organs have become unavoidable meeting point for people of Zadar and tourists.

The Sun Salutation is a circle 22 metres in diameter in level with the stone-paved promenade consisting of three hundred glass multilayer boards. Below the boards there are solar, photovoltaic modules that during the day absorb sun energy. After the sunset the lighting elements are included, which are also located below the boards, and due to the special programmed scenario they perform beautiful, impressive light plays in the rhythm of the waves and sounds of the Sea Organs. Installation of the Sun Salutation as the model of the solar system with corresponding planets is connected with the Sea Organs which sounds transpose into a light game performing after the sunset on the Zadar seafront

Attractions

People of Zadar rightly considered that the most beautiful sunset can be seen from the Zadar seafront. Alfred Hitchcock, a famous director confirmed it during his visit in Zadar in May 1964. Watching the sunset from the window of his room 204 in the former Hotel Zagreb he wrote the following:“The sunset in Zadar is the most beautiful in the world and it is incomparably more beautiful than the one in Key West on Florida.“ Next morning the famous director stood in front of the lens of the great Zadar photographer Ante Brkan who took one of the best director's portrait.
